You might have seen a new kind of Mountain Dew in stores for a few months now – Hard Mountain Dew. As the name suggests, this variant of the famous soda brand contains a small amount of alcohol, thus the word “hard” in its name.
You might wonder how this version of Mountain Dew came to be or if you can get drunk from drinking this hard beverage. Well, those are some excellent questions we’ll answer here. So keep reading to find out!
Is Hard Mountain Dew made by Pepsi?
PepsiCo, the manufacturer of Pepsi, teamed up with Boston Beer Company to launch Hard Mountain Dew in February 2022. This version of Mountain Dew contains alcohol and has been successful so far.
In 2021, the two companies announced they would launch Hard Mountain Dew the following year. Boston Beer Company is one of the top brewers in the U.S. It has a lot of experience creating new and innovative alcoholic beverages. On the other hand, PepsiCo is one of the most popular food and beverage brands in the U.S.
So, the two companies working together to create Hard Mountain Dew were met with excitement and expectations. Boston Beer Company is responsible for developing and producing the drink, while PepsiCo is in charge of sales and distribution of the beverage. For distribution, PepsiCo created a new entity, Blue Cloud Distribution Inc.
Hard Mountain Dew was initially launched only in Iowa, Florida, and Tennessee. However, over the past few months, it has expanded to six other states in the U.S. It’s too soon to tell whether the drink has been doing well in the market. However, a soda brand launching an alcoholic version of its drink has got people intrigued.
What does Hard Mountain Dew taste like?
Hard Mountain Dew contains only a tiny amount of alcohol which isn’t very apparent in the drink’s taste. Depending on the drink’s flavor, it has a robust and fruity taste similar to its original, non-alcoholic counterparts.
Hard Mountain Dew comes in a range of flavors. This alcoholic variant also has an original flavor reminiscent of the classic Mountain Dew flavor you’ve probably tasted before. This flavor has a hint of citrus, and you can detect a slight tinge of alcohol in the beverage. Some reviews have compared the taste to cough syrup, so it might not be for everyone.
This drink is meant to have fewer calories and contains no added sugars. Instead, it only contains the artificial sweeteners Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K) and Sucralose. These ingredients make the Hard Mountain Dew flavors sweet and keep the taste of alcohol from overpowering it.
Is Hard Mountain Dew caffeinated?
Hard Mountain Dew contains zero caffeine and no added sugar.
PepsiCo and Boston Beer Company launched this drink to have a soda-like alcoholic beverage with next to no calories. Of course, the fact that it doesn’t contain much sugar or any caffeine does not make it healthy. But for the more health-conscious, the thought of this being a diet alcoholic seltzer sounds appealing.
Hard Mountain Dew was launched at a perfect time. Today, people are moving away from sodas and searching for other alternatives, especially RTDs. According to Mintel, the total sales volume for RTD cocktails increased by 226% from 2016 to 2021.
RTD beverages, especially hard seltzers, have been booming these past few years. According to IWSR, RTDs have rapidly grown in the beverage category since 2018. It was also the only drink category that grew in 2021, making 30.5$ billion worldwide. RTDs are also expected to grow by 27% in volume worldwide in 2022.
What flavors are available?
There are four flavors of Hard Mountain Dew that were launched by PepsiCo: Original, Watermelon, Baja Blast, and Black Cherry.
The Original flavor, as mentioned before, is similar to the original, except a bit less sweet and has a slight bitter note from the alcohol. The other flavors, however, have a bit of a difference.
Baja Blast is one of the preferable flavors. The tropical fruit flavors in the drink mask the taste of the artificial sweetener and the bitter alcohol. It is a perfect blend with no flavors clashing unpleasantly on the taste buds.
Watermelon as a flavor is an interesting one. In many reviews, it’s deemed similar to Jolly Rancher’s watermelon flavor because of its candy-like taste and smell. It’s a sweet beverage and doesn’t have an unpleasant aftertaste because of the artificial sweeteners. The slight taste of alcohol gives it an enjoyable kick.
Black Cherry has had ambiguous reviews. Some described its taste and scent as similar to candy, its sweet fruity flavor appealing. Others, on the other hand, found the taste reminiscent of cough syrup or something medicinal. The bitter alcoholic aftertaste probably doesn’t do it many favors, either.
What is the alcohol content?
Hard Mountain Dew contains 5% alcohol by volume (ABV). This amount is tiny, and according to reviews, the taste of alcohol isn’t very prevalent in the beverage.
Despite not being too noticeable, the alcohol in Hard Mountain Dew can still get you tipsy if you have 2 to 3 12 oz cans. The drink’s delicious, citrusy flavor might make you think you’re drinking regular soda, but don’t be fooled; you can definitely get drunk. So make sure to limit yourself to 1 or 2 cans maximum, just in case.
Mountain Dew has come full circle. In the 1940s, Mountain Dew was made to be used as a mixer in alcoholic spirits, especially whiskey. Over the decades, it carved its way as a soft drink more than a mixer. But with the launch of Hard Mountain Dew, it has once again found its way back to its alcoholic roots.
Mountain Dew isn’t the only famous brand that ventured into the alcoholic territory. In 2021, Coca-Cola Company partnered with Molson Coors Beverage Company to produce Topo Chico Hard Seltzer. This was an alcoholic spin-off of Coca-Cola’s existing product, Topo Chico Mineral Water.
In late 2022, Coca-Cola collaborated with Jack Daniel’s to produce an RTD, a mixture of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and Coke. For a long time, Coke has been a beloved mixer in Jack Daniel’s whiskey to create cocktails. Thus, the launch of this beverage was met with much anticipation and is currently debuted in Mexico.
Today, the world gravitates towards hard seltzers such as Hard Mountain Dew. So it was a good decision for PepsiCo to collaborate on creating this delicious beverage.
This drink is available in multiple U.S. states, primarily Iowa, Florida, and Tennessee. Unfortunately, you can’t find it online, so you’ll have to search for it in grocery stores.
The next time you find it on one of the shelves, give it a try! This RTD will have you feeling buzzed with its fizz and alcohol. But make sure not to have too many, or you might get tipsy!
